A Scotsman, he has been in this country for 56 years, still has a strong accent and as he says “why shouldn’t I, a Scotsman never gives anything away!”
His first years in the country were taken up with ten years in New Zealand Police, resigning, when about to be promoted to Senior Sergeant, to begin a fourteen year stint in drainage and water supply contracting.
From contracting he moved to social work, based in Alexandra but with responsibilities throughout Central Otago, for 12 years. (he says most social workers “throw the towel in” after two years) but he felt privileged to be part of the lives of many children (now grown up) and their families, throughout his social work career.
He joined his wife Pat in real estate in 1993, gained his Associate New Zealand Real Estate Licence in 1996. He has an abiding interest in New Zealand law, particularly now as it affects real estate. He enjoys weekly training sessions with the team - where his contribution is significant - as is his readiness to select worthwhile material for discussion. He is well known throughout the district - having been the president of the Chamber of Commerce and Central Otago Real Estate simultaneously - and has always been approachable (particularly to real estate clients).
Alan remains interested in athletics and swimming - but golf has taken precedence recently.
